IDENTIFICATION OF FOREST ZONES IN THE STATE OF GUERRERO

The purpose of this work was to identify forest zones in the state of Guerrero for the years 1992 and 2000, with images from the Landsat satellite. The work was performed at the request of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection(PROFEPA).

For the interpretation of the data, the following points should be taken into account:

1. The difference between the seasons when the images were taken makes it difficult to compare the vegetation, due to the different physiognomic conditions and different phenological phases in which the vegetation is found. The first image was taken October 24, 1992, one month after the rainy season, when the vegetation has the greatest quantity of foliage ; the second was taken on April 13, 2000, during the dry season of the year, when part of the vegetation tends to lose its leaves and many annual species have died.

2. The results correspond to an unsupervised clustering, which often implies that probably some pixels or a considerable number of pixels a labeled not correctly.

3. As there was no groundtruthing available this false labeling of some pixels
could not be corrected.

4. For the same reason namely the lack of groundtruthing, the overall accuracy of the classification can not be computed.
