The Museum of Zoology has as one of its principles that of increasing and maintaining scientific reference collections, representative of the fauna of the Yucatan Peninsula. It has collections of fish, amphibian and reptiles, birds, mammas and invertebrates.

Within the group of fishes, the Museum has priority interest in the marine and continental osseous and cartilaginous fish of the Yucatan Peninsula and adjacent areas. The Collection of Reef Ichthyofauna of Southern Quintana Roo forms an important part of this collection and is constituted by 2 720 records from Mexico, United States and Belize pertaining to 57 families, 111 genera and 195 species, and it pertains to the SNIB.
