RESULTS FROM THE 2002 PROGRAM The program was carried out from January 8 to October 31 using AVHRR daytime and nighttime satellite images. MODIS satellite images were used beginning April, based on two passes. Nighttime AVHRR images are taken between 1:00 and 6:00 local time. Daytime AVHRR images are taken between 16:30 and 19:00. MODIS images are taken between 10:50 and 14:00. The difference between pass 1 and pass 2 is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The exact hour of the image taken is shown in the section with tabular information. General Map The general map shows all hot spots detected with nighttime AVHRR images for the period January 8 to October 31, 2002. This map is the result of superimposing maps corresponding to each of the days on which hot spot were recorded. Images Analyzed The following tables show information referring to the number of days without image, to the number of days with information from at least one hot spot, and the total number of days on which no hot spot were detected.

Duration of hot spots at a single location The following tables show the percentage of days on which hot spots were recorded at a single location (not necessarily consecutive days): Nighttime AVHRR Images

MODIS Images, Pass 2
Natural Vegetation Most Affected The percentage of hot spots located in preserved natural vegetation (that is, those categories of vegetation not presenting fragmentation or disturbance according to the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics classification of 1996, preliminary version) vary as a function of the satellite and the time of pass. Percentages are as follows: nighttime AVHRR images, 66%; daytime AVHRR images, 33%; MODIS images, pass 1, 24%; MODIS images, pass 2, 42%. Below is the distribution of the hot spots in preserved natural vegetation, by group: Nighttime AVHRR Images

The five types of vegetation most affected by the presence of hot spot are shown in the following table:
