Official language

Spanish. In the tourism industry, English, French, Italian and German are also spoken. Part of the local indigenous population still speaks Mayan.

Time Zone

GMT/UTC -6 (Most of Mexico is on Central Standard Time).
Daylight Savings Time begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the last Sunday in October.

Weather

Cancun has a tropical humid climate. The average maximum and minimum temperatures from October to December are 20o to 31o C (68o to 87o F).

Electricity

The standard is 110 volts. Hotels usually offer voltage converters for 220 volt devices. Some sockets do not accept polarized or three-prong plugs. It is recommended that you bring your own adapter.

Money and Currency

The official coin is the Mexican Peso (Code: MXN  and Symbol: $), but American Dollars are accepted in most places.
The exchange rate between these two currencies fluctuates daily, however, it has been around 10 ~ 11 pesos = 1 USD on 2008.

Banks in Cancun open Monday to Friday, usually from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, some branches open on Saturdays.

The majority of Money Exchanges open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. There are Money Exchanges in various areas of the Hotel Zone open after these hours and ´till late into the night.

Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted by establishments in Mexico.  Other international cards, such as Diners Card and American Express, are also accepted.

 Tips

One or two dollars per suitcase carried, and 10-15% of the total bill in restaurants and bars. Tips may already be included.

Communications

The main tourist areas have all the facilities, such as fax and Internet service, telephone services with pre-paid cards or credit cards and cellular telephone rental.

Cell phones: Contact your service provider to learn if there are compatible companies in Mexico that can provide cell phone service. There are cell phones for rent per day for local use. Ask your travel agent for information.

Telephones: to make an international call from Mexico, dial the access code (001 for the U.S. and Canada; 00 for the rest of the world) + country code + phone number. Your hotel’s operator can help you.

Passport / Visa

Mexico Visa Policy permits citizens of the countries listed below to travel to Mexico WITHOUT a visa (FMTTV – Migratory form for Tourists):

Andorra, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Chile, Costa Rica,  Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Island, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Leetonia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Rumania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay, USA, Venezuela.

For USA citizens only:

*  Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, travelling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
*  As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, travelling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Other Countries:

* Visa.
* Notify the Mexican Embassy in your country of your visit through your travel agency.
* Minors travelling alone, require notarized written permission from their parents.
* Airport Departure Tax is approximately $17.00 USD. Children under 2  years of age are exempt.

 Visas can be obtained from the Mexican Diplomatic/Consular Mission prior to departure. A list of the Mexican consular and diplomatic missions abroad can be accessed at the following web site:   http://www.sre.gob.mx/english/

To facilitate the issuance of visas, CONABIO (CITES Scientific Authority of Mexico) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico will issue a list of participants that will be attending the workshop. This list will be distributed among the relevant consular offices, for this reason is important that you send your Registration Format in order to identify your visa need.
