PATH OF HURRICANE PAULINE

A special committee of the World Meteorological Organization (Organización Meteorológica Mundial), which carries out regularly the evaluation and monitoring of the hurricane season, selects all names for tropical cyclones and publishes these lists worldwide in official documents. The official name of the hurricane concerned was "Pauline."

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is among eight main zones of cyclogenesis worldwide. In this region, nearly 17% of the cyclones occurring annually form (Musk, 1992).

Hurricane Pauline's speed during its early stage, along with its vorticity, were extremely important for its development and effects in our country. Also important was the influence of prevailing conditions due to planetary-scale adjacent systems, as well as the mid- and high circulation in our atmosphere. The Sierra Madre del Sur was a natural barrier preventing the phenomenon from affecting the internal territory Mexico.

This hurricane occurred during the 1997 hurricane season, and due to its effects it is considered the most important hurricane of the century occurring in the North Pacific eastern zone.
